My “Aha” Moment — Learning to Earn Trust When People Need It Most
My “Aha” Moment — Learning to Earn Trust When People Need It MostBefore I ever thought about becoming a Realtor, I worked as an LVN in a skilled nursing facility. I loved caring for people, but when I decided to go back to school to get my real estate license, I needed more flexibility — so I transitioned into home health and hospice, specializing in quad care.At that time in my life, believe it or not I was very shy. Quiet. Reserved. I kept my world close and my heart guarded. I wasn’t the type to open up easily. But suddenly, my work meant walking into people’s homes — often at the most vulnerable and emotional moments of their lives. There wasn’t time to build trust slowly. These families needed to have confidence in me and feel safe with me almost immediately. They needed to hand me not just the responsibility of medical care, but their loved ones, their fears, worries, anger, hopes and joys as well.I realized quickly:Trust isn’t earned with credentials. It’s earned with humanity. So, I began to do something that didn’t come naturally to me.I opened up.I shared pieces of my world.I let my compassion and empathy show.I allowed myself to be real and vulnerable— not just the “professional nurse,” but a genuine human being standing beside them. And something remarkable happened. The more real I became, the more people trusted me.Not because I had all the answers —but because they knew I truly cared. That was my aha moment.I learned that meaningful work — whether in nursing or real estate — is built on connection. You can’t help people unless you’re willing to meet them where they are and let them see who you really are too.Later, when I moved fully into real estate, those lessons came with me.Walking clients through buying or selling a home may not look like hospice care — but in many ways, it is still a deeply emotional transition. People aren’t just moving addresses. They’re moving lives. And when someone invites me into that part of their story,I remember the honor — and responsibility — of being trusted. Those early nursing years shaped me into more than a Realtor. They shaped me into a listener.A guide.A calm presence in uncertain times. And they taught me something I will always hold close:When you lead with authenticity, people feel safe putting their future in your hands. And that is a privilege I never take lightly.Rain Silverhawk
